Mobile gaming phenomenons tend to come and go quite quickly. Think Angry Birds, Pokemon Go, and Candy Crush, to name just three. But one massively popular game was cut down in its prime, and people have been expecting a sequel ever since. Yep, you guessed it, Flappy Bird is back…
Flappy Bird Is Making a Comeback After 10 Years
A full 10 years after the same disappeared from app stores overnight, Flappy Bird is making a return. However, this isn’t quite the game you’ll remember from 2013, with the Flappy Bird website teasing new characters to control, worlds to explore, and modes to beat.
As a reminder, Flappy Bird was one of the best simple mobile games ever made, but it was devilishly hard to master. All you had to do was guide the titular flappy bird between sets of pipes by pressing the screen at the right time. Sounds easy, right? Well, it wasn’t, and this frustrating level design and gameplay mechanic fueled the game’s popularity.
Now, Flappy Bird is returning, with a brand-new title that seeks to honor the memory of the original while updating it for a modern audience. To that end, there are multiple characters to control, worlds to explore, and modes to play. The latter includes a basketball game and a multiplayer mode with up to 99 other players.
Flappy Bird Fans Have Acquired the Rights to the Game
The rise and fall of the original Flappy Bird is a rather incredible story. Its creator, Dong Nguyen, created the game from scratch in a few days. And in the best tradition of online virality, once it found an audience, it exploded in popularity as everyone wanted to test their skills for themselves.
Then, after racking up 100 million downloads, and raking in $50,000/day in ad revenues, Nguyen decided to pull the plug. He removed the game from app stores with little warning, and that was the end of Flappy Bird. Or so we thought.
Now, however, a team of fans has created a new version of the game, acquiring the legal rights to release an all-new Flappy Bird. Whether Nguyen is involved or not, and if so, how much, isn’t clear.
Are You Ready to Get Frustrated All Over Again?
The new Flappy Bird should, all being well, be available on Android and iOS in 2025. However, The Flappy Bird Foundation Group has plans to release the game on desktop and the mobile web before the native mobile apps appear.
I must admit that I’ll be tempted to check the new Flappy Bird out. Even though I already know that it will provide a frustrating gameplay experience that will haunt my nightmares. So, the question is, are you ready to get flappingly frustrated once again?
