Key Takeaways
- Creepypasta, The Darkest Blog, Your Ghost Stories, Castle of Spirits, and Scary for Kids offer chilling stories for the perfect scare.
- FrightFind and Haunted Houses help you find haunted locations and events near you. Hashima Island, on the other hand, lets you digitally explore an abandoned island.

Whether you’re getting into the spirit of Halloween or just looking to explore something out of the ordinary, we’ve put together a few scary websites that are sure to send a shiver down your spine. If you enjoy a good scare, these websites won’t disappoint.
In the mood for horror stories that range from somewhat unsettling to downright terrifying? Well, Creepypasta is the site for you! The stories are user-generated, but I’ve found that many of them are chilling, to say the least.
The website is also updated with new stories daily, so there’s something new to read each time you visit. The good news is that it’s all fictional, so even though some stories blur the lines between reality and the supernatural, you can take comfort in knowing that it’s penned by someone letting their creativity run wild.
Either way, if paranormal short stories are what you’re looking for, I can’t recommend Creepypasta enough. When you’re on the site, scroll down to view the top-rated stories for the best experience.
If you want to find haunted houses near you, FrightFind has an extensive database of spooky locations worth checking out. You’ll need to filter by state to view all the haunted locations nearby. Additionally, you can also check out any spooky events that might be happening in your state through FrightFind. For instance, I found a few cemetery ghost tours around me that I had never heard of before.
If you’re not actually looking to visit a place, you can still find plenty of information about haunted locations on FrightFind. Even just reading some of these accounts can be pretty frightening. In my opinion, it’s a creepy website worth sharing with your friends.
Like FrightFind above, Haunted Houses lets you discover haunted locations nationwide. But what sets it apart is the interactive map on the homepage. Once you’re on the homepage, click any state of your choice, and you’ll instantly be shown all the haunted locations in the area.
Some of these haunted homes/sites have fairly detailed descriptions and photos that let you take a deep dive into the eerie history of the property. The website also features several videos of paranormal investigators sharing their real-life experiences, which I found interesting, too. All in all, there’s plenty to explore on the Haunted Houses website, and it’s a great way to spend a few hours.
Homicide Monitor is different from the websites we’ve mentioned so far because it offers insight into a sobering topic—global homicide rates. The site features an interactive globe; selecting any country pulls up the latest data on homicide rates and provides statistics on how these rates have changed over time.
You can also view the homicide rates for major cities within different countries to better understand how these cases are distributed nationwide. While it’s definitely not scary in a paranormal sense, I find this quite eye-opening and frightening, considering how it reflects the harsh realities that many of us face.
Ever wanted to visit an abandoned location? Why not explore Hashima Island from the comfort of your own home? This island was once a thriving coal mining town located just about nine miles from Nagasaki, Japan.
Since 1974, though, it’s been completely abandoned, but you can visit it digitally through this website and even explore some of the spookier places within the island, like Nikkyu Flats, the Stairway to Hell, and the infamous coal mine. When you’re exploring these locations, don’t miss the haunting descriptions that come up on the right. They make the entire experience feel all the more eerie.
If you want to check out a website with a little bit of everything, I can’t recommend The Darkest Blog enough. Featuring scary short stories, book reviews, and short horror films, among other things, this website is a one-stop destination for all things paranormal.
The stories are also regularly updated, so this is the sort of website you can visit repeatedly to get your fill of spooky content!
Unlike many websites on this list, Morbidology steers clear of paranormal cases. Instead, it delves into something far more unsettling — real-life horrors that are far scarier than anything otherworldly.
From true crime stories to deep dives into dangerous cults and unsolved murders, the stories on Morbidology reveal a rather grim portrait of humanity. If you’re a true crime fan and enjoy reading, be sure to also check out the Books section, which offers some really good recommendations. And if you’re into audio content, there are plenty of podcasts available on the platform. Like some of the free podcast apps, Morbidology’s podcast is also free to access.
If paranormal stories are more your thing, Your Ghost Stories will give you that fix. It features a vast collection of personal accounts about ghost encounters from readers worldwide (if you’ve had a paranormal experience yourself, you can publish your story on the website, too).
If you find any stories especially interesting, don’t forget to leave a comment behind to let the author know your thoughts. The website also features videos and photos of supposed hauntings, so be sure to check those out too, and see if you’re able to debunk them.
This website features a podcast as well as numerous reader-submitted stories about the supernatural and the unexplained. You can even look up specific types of stories or submit stories if you want to share your experiences with the world.
Something I enjoyed about this website is the Urban Legends section. This features some scary yet interesting stories about the history of Halloween, the chilling tale about Bloody Mary, how Ouija boards came about, and so on. These write-ups deliver a good scare but offer insight into the origins of the tales we’ve all heard growing up.
With this website, all I can say is, don’t be fooled by the name; while you might assume Scary for Kids only features child-friendly content, I think some of the stories on it can get pretty frightening.
Apart from stories, the website features a variety of scary games that you can try with your friends and eerie images that will send a chill down your spine. There’s also a whole collection of urban legends that are pretty interesting to explore.
These are a few scary websites that truly stood out to me. If you’re more into visual content than reading stories online, there are plenty of websites that allow you to watch horror movies for free. So, be sure to check those out as well.
