If you’ve been waiting with bated breath for Apple Intelligence to drop, the wait may soon be over. On Monday, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported that Apple has set a release date of October 28th, for both Apple Intelligence and iOS 18.1. The update will be available for iPhone, iPad, and Mac.
Apple Intelligence Limited to Certain iPhone Models
Only certain iPhone models will receive Apple Intelligence, however. These include the iPhone 16 series, as well as the iPhone 15 Pro, and Pro Max. Unfortunately, the basic iPhone 15 models will not be receiving AI features.
That’s a bit of a bummer for folks who purchased an iPhone 15 just last year, even though it isn’t unexpected. Apple has a habit of releasing its newest features on its newest devices, arguably as an incentive to upgrade. If this update is making you consider upgrading, we’ve recently reviewed the iPhone 16 Plus and were impressed by a number of its features.
Another important caveat to mention: this Apple Intelligence update will only be available to US English users. Which means for those who live across the pond, you’ll only have access to the update by switching to US English. If that’s not something that sounds appealing, then you’ll need to wait until later this year to use the new Apple Intelligence features.
Apple Intelligence Features Coming in October
Speaking of features, only a handful will be coming with the October 28th release. They include Notification Summaries, Smart Replies for quickly firing off messages, an update to Siri, Clean Up for Photos, and Writing Tools. The latter allows for proofreading and rewriting across apps within the Apple ecosystem.
More features are coming at a later date, however. These will include integration for ChatGPT, Image Playground, and GenMoji. It looks as if these features are slated to arrive before the end of the year. Sources also say that a major overhaul of Siri will arrive at some point in early 2025.
For those of us patiently awaiting Apple Intelligence, it’s great to see Apple moving so fast to get the update onto devices. And even though we’ll have to hold out a bit longer to experience everything Apple Intelligence promises, just knowing that some features are coming before month end is pretty exciting.
