Ring Finally Adds 24/7 Recording for Security Cameras, But it Will Cost You

Ring is finally adding a long awaited feature for some of its wired security cameras—24/7 video recording. The company is also changing its different subscription tiers. Here’s what you need to know.

Continuous Recording, For a Price

In a Ring blog post, the company announced that 24/7 recording will soon be available for select wired cameras with a Ring Home Premium Plan. It will be available for the Stick Up Cam, Stick Up Cam Pro, second-generation Indoor Cam, and Pan-Tilt Indoor Cam.

With continuous recording, the cameras will record and capture all activity, even outside of motion zones for a better idea of what is happening. Major Ring competitors Arlo and Google have long offered 24/7 for some cameras, so it’s good to see Ring offer the same feature.

All Ring subscribers will also be able to make use of new video Preview Alerts. Those will provide a short video clip directly to a motion notification. Ring is also extending how long you can see a Live View from your cameras. With Extended Live View, you can take a look at a live feed for up to 30 minutes. Finally, when someone rings a doorbell camera, Doorbell Calls will ring your phone like it’s a phone call. You can answer the call immediately and speak directly to whoever is at the door with Live View.

New Name for Ring Subscription Plans

Ring is also changing its subscription plan offerings. Ring Protect is now called Ring Home. The prices will remain the same with the lower-tier Ring Home Basic starting at $4.99 per month. Home Standard is $9.99 per month and Home Premium is $19.99 monthly.

You can now also individually add Virtual Security Guard or Alarm Professional Monitoring to a Standard or Premium Plan. All the new features and Ring subscription plan changes will start on November 5.

Earlier this year, I reviewed one of the Ring cameras that will soon be able to record 24/7—the Stick Up Cam Pro. Being able to continuously record makes the camera much more useful, even with an expensive subscription. The other additions help put Ring cameras on par with most competitors as well.
