Popular Philips Hue Smart Lighting App Adds Handy AR Feature

Philips Hue lights are one of the most popular smart home products on the market. And the companion app has just received a new update with a great AR feature to see how Hue products will look in your home.

The new AR feature was first spotted by Hueblog. Version 5.27 of the Hue app is available for the iPhone, iPad, and Android. But the AR feature is only available for an iPhone or iPad Pro with a LiDAR sensor. Apple started adding the sensor with the iPhone 12 Pro line in 2020. Any iPad Pro from 2020 onwards also has the same sensor.

If you have a compatible device, make sure that your app is updated and head to the Explore section. Then select Try lights with AR. You can choose from a wide variety of Hue products, everything from the smaller Hue Twilight lamp to larger products like the Signe Gradient floor lamp.

Just tap the screen to place the product in your home. You can also change the light level to see how the product looks during the day and at night. Other controls include the ability to adjust the brightness, change the color, and even run a different scene. It’s even possible to view different colors of the lighting products.

I tried the feature out at a number of spots around my home, and it worked very well. Being able to adjust lighting and see different scenes was a big help. If you’re in the market to add more Hue lighting to your existing setup, it’s a great way to visualize what the new products will look like.

Make sure to see a number of other fun ways that you can use LiDAR on your iPhone.

Another addition in the app update includes a Do Not Disturb option that won’t allow a device to change lights that are already on.

Another Nice Addition to the Great Ecosystem

I’ve been using smart home products for more than a decade, and the smart lighting from Philips Hue remains my favorite brand.

One of the reasons I’ve enjoyed the Hue line is the wide variety of different products available to choose from—I have some kind of Hue product in every room of my home. While I’m currently not in the market to add a new Hue device, I will definitely try out the AR feature in the app if I ever want to make any additions.
